Welp, Mosseri is back in his chair talking to the camera again which only means one thing—new Instagram updates are here! Sadly, it’s not about how they are going to work on getting rid of spam comments or organic reach (sad!) but it will help you “manage [your] time and what [you] see on the app,” according to Mosseri.
So … yay? There are three new Instagram features (and one that has been released worldwide, finally!) that are officially live on the app. Here’s everything you need to know about the three new features and how to use them today.

What new features did Instagram release?

Last week, Mosseri explained that there are three new Instagram features that are officially live on the app.
The new features include:
  • Quiet Mode
  • Hidden Words for Recommendations
  • Not Interested Multi-Select
đź’ˇ Plus, Instagram Notes are now launched worldwide. If you want to know more about Instagram Notes, click here.
Now, what in the world are these new features and how can they be helpful for you? We’re so glad you asked. Let’s dive into each one:

How to use Instagram’s Quiet Mode

With quiet mode, you’ll be able to choose times and days of the week when you don’t want Instagram to bother you. At all (yes, if you have an iPhone already, it’s already a feature you have on there). Because Instagram keeps working on features to help users protect their mental health, Quiet Mode will give users control over how much they’d like and during what time of day they’d like to be notified about Instagram.

You can turn on Quiet Mode by:
  1. Go to your profile and click the hamburger menu
  2. Click “Settings”
  3. Click “Notifications”
  4. Click the “Quiet Mode” option
  5. From here, you can select the hours you want Quiet Mode on
Once you have selected your time frame, your notifications will be silenced during that time, and an auto-reply will be sent to anyone who tries to message you on the app.

How to use Instagram’s Hidden Words for Recommendations feature

The hidden words feature has already been released in DMs, where you can hide words or phrases from being shown to you. Now, Instagram has released hidden words for recommendations, allowing you to choose words and phrases you don’t want on your suggested posts or Explore Page. Huzzah!

You can select your words and get started on getting the best content curated to you by:
  1. Go to your profile
  2. Click on “Settings”
  3. Click on “Privacy”
  4. Click “Hidden Words”
From here, choose words or phrases that you’d like to stop being recommended and blocked from your profile. Once this is done, Instagram will stop recommending you content with those words in the caption or in the Alt text (learn more about alt text and being accessible here).
Mosseri also explained that this will impact the content in your Feed, Explore Page, and anywhere else you might get recommended content.

How to use Instagram’s Multi-select Not Interested feature

Lastly, not interested got a major upgrade. You can now press and choose multiple photos and videos on your Explore Page that you’re not interested in seeing ever again so Instagram knows and can curate your feed to be even better.
If you’re wanting to select all the things you’re uninterested in, here’s how to do that:
  1. Go to your explore page and long press on the content you don’t want.
  2. Click on “Not Interested”
  3. At the bottom of the page, a pop-up will appear
  4. You can then multi-select and hide more posts that you’re not interested in
While I’ll still hold out hope that the bots who like my story go away sometime soon, we are excited about the not interested and hidden words features. What about you? Let us know over on our Instagram.
