After months of talking about it, it’s finally here—Instagram Threads App! It’s Meta’s latest app to the game and quite honestly? We’re loving it. It feels like the early days of social media when social media was … fun, and not a job to do! And yes, the app has quite a few people shaking in their boots (ahem, Elon).
To help you get started on what Threads exactly are and why we think you should give it a go, here’s your guide to everything we know about Threads.

What is the Threads App?

But, like, what exactly is this new app? If you ask Instagram, it’s “a new app, built by the Instagram team, for sharing text updates and joining public conversations.”

So … essentially it’s Twitter.
At the moment, Threads links to your Instagram and uses your Instagram account to get you logged in and thread-ing (is that what we’re calling it?). In the future, Meta wants to integrate Threads with ActivityPub to make it compatible with other apps.
What the heck does that mean?
Well, it means that you’ll be able to bring your followers with you to other places so you’re not only relying on social media when you’re talking to your followers. Because you never know, your account might get taken away one day and all those followers you had at one point could be gone in a blink of an eye.
Having a more decentralized social media platform where you can take people to other servers and apps would be a huge thing for a lot of small business owners, marketers, and more!

Who has access to Threads?

At the current moment, Instagram announced that it is releasing Threads to more than 100 countries, so if you don’t have it yet in your App Store, it’ll probably be there soon!

How does Instagram Threads App work?

The app is very, very (VERY) similar to Twitter, and honestly, quite a few other apps out there that are text-based. Threads lets you post a text-based post along with images, videos, or links.
  • Each post can be up to 500 characters long (better than Twitter!).
  • Videos have to be 5 minutes or less to upload.
  • Your account can be private or public (whatever you want!).

How to set up your Instagram Threads profile

Now how do you go about setting up your own Threads profile? It’s super simple!
  1. Download the app
  2. Login using your Instagram account.
  3. Write your bio, add your image, and a link (if you want!). Something that Instagram makes SO easy for you is you can click “Import from Instagram” and all the information on your bio will move over to Threads.
  4. Select whether you want your account to be public or private
  5. Choose if you want to follow the same people you follow on Instagram, or if you want to manually follow people.
  6. Click “Next” and you’re good to go! You have a Threads account!

How to follow other users on Instagram Threads

When you’re first setting up your Threads account, you’ll have the option to follow all the same people you already follow on Instagram. If they have a public account, you’ll be able to immediately start following them. If they have a private account, they’ll receive a request from you.

You can also decide to bypass that option and manually follow people. To manually follow, all you have to do is click on the search button and type in a user’s name. Once you find who you want to follow, you simply click the “follow” button on their profile.
If you’re on your Threads homepage and see a Thread account that you like and want to follow, all you have to do is click the “+” underneath their profile photo. A popup will appear confirming if you want to follow that account or not.

How to block users on Threads

If there is someone bothering you and you want to block them (or maybe it’s your ex’s new girlfriend and you can’t handle that—I see you and I am you), here is how to block on Threads:
  1. Go to their profile page
  2. Click the three dots above their profile picture
  3. Click “Block”
  4. And you’re done!
  5. They won’t be able to send you messages or find your profile or anything on both Threads and Instagram.

How to post to Threads

Woo! It’s time to post your first unhinged Thread! But, how do you do it? Again, it’s super simple:
instagram threads app write a post
  • From the homepage, click the notepad icon at the bottom of the screen
  • You’ll be then asked to write your first post. You can use up to 500 characters, tag others, and include photos, videos, links, and emojis.
  • Once you’ve crafted the perfect post, all you have to do is click “Post” and that’s it!

How to turn off notifications on Threads

If you’re already tired of receiving notifications on Threads, here’s how to turn them off completely:
  1. On your profile, click on the settings symbol (it’s two horizontal lines right above your profile picture)
  2. Click “Notifications”
  3. You can then pause all notifications or select “threads and replies” or “following and followers” to dive deeper into the notifications you do and don’t want

How to delete a post on Threads

Post something that you’re now rethinking? Been there, done that. To delete a specific Thread, all you have to do is:
  1. Click the three dots next to the Thread
  2. Click “Delete”
And that’s it. Seriously. Easy. Peasy.

How to delete your Instagram Threads account

So you’ve tested Threads out and it’s not quite for you? Totally fair. Right now there is a rumor that if you delete your Threads account, it’ll delete your Instagram account and that’s simply not true.
Here’s how to turn off your notifications:
  1. Go to your settings from your profile
  2. Click on “Account”
  3. Click “Deactivate profile”
Once you’ve deactivated, everything related to your Threads account will be hidden until you log back in.

And to dispel those pesky rumors? Mosseri said on a recent thread:

“You can deactivate your Threads account, which hides your Threads profile and content, you can set your profile to private, and you can delete individual threads posts — all without deleting your Instagram account. Threads is powered by Instagram, so right now it’s just one account, but we’re looking into a way to delete your Threads account separately.”

Why does my Threads timeline have users I don’t follow?

Instagram Threads has stated that your timeline has a mixture of users you follow and those that the app believes you would like. According to Threads, the recommendations on your Threads algorithm will get more and more accurate based on what you like and enjoy on the app.

How do I view my Threads timeline chronologically?

Sigh. At the moment, this isn’t possible.

Can I hide my Threads badge on my Instagram profile?

Yes! All you have to do is go to your Instagram profile, click the Threads badge, and select “Hide Badge.”
Now get out there are start thread-ing it up! And if you are feeling a bit nervous about your first Thread, perhaps our AI Social Media Assistant can help you with that stage fright and first post. Try out a free trial with Flick today to get started or test out our FREE Caption Generator below.
