Instagram Notes are finally here—but what does that actually mean for you? And will you even use them? It’s definitely been the talk of the internet since Adam Mosseri released the news yesterday so let’s dive into what Instagram Notes are and how you could use them in the future.

What are Instagram Notes?

With the announcement of several new features on Instagram this week, Instagram Notes is the one that seems to have everyone talking.

Instagram Notes are like MSN Messenger, AIM away messages, or the good ol’ Facebook status message at the top of your Instagram DMs. In 60 characters, you can share your thoughts or what you’re up to—anywhere from asking a question, explaining what you’re doing, or leaving a cryptic song lyric for a crush.

Notes disappear after 24 hours (like an Instagram Story) and your followers can reply to your notes by sending a DM.

How do you create an Instagram Note?

At the top of your Inbox in Instagram, you’ll see the Notes section. If any of the people you follow have created a Note, you’ll be able to see what they said here.

If you want to make your own Instagram Note, here’s how to do just that:
Click the “+” to create a new Note
Write your 60-character Note
Choose who you would like to be able to see the Note
Click “share”

💡 After you post the Note, no one will get notified about the fact that you posted but it will live in your DMs for 24 hours before disappearing.

How do you send someone a reply to an Instagram Note?

This is one of the easiest bits! If you see a Note that you’re like “hot dang, I really want to reply to that!,” here’s how to do just that:

Open your Inbox and look through the Notes
Click on the Note that you want to reply to
A prompt will appear where you can send the person a direct message

And that’s it! They will receive your message in the DMs.

Can you delete an Instagram Note?

If you are feeling instant regret from an Instagram Note you sent out into the world, you can delete it.

All you have to do is:

Go to your Inbox and find where your Instagram Note is located
Click on the Note
A popup will appear that will let you leave a new Note or delete the one you already have posted.
Click “Delete note” or, you can always replace it with a new Note of your choosing.

Can you send individual Instagram Notes?

No, but if you want to send individual Notes, we would suggest you send something called a DM.
