And they are now coming in the form of Instagram Avatars. Recently in an Instagram video, Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri explained that “avatars are a key building block for the future of personal identity in the metaverse.”

Is anyone else thinking about that scene in Wall-E? 😳

What are Instagram Avatars?

Instagram Avatars are similar to Bitmoji and, if you’re an Apple user, the cute little Memoji you made of yourself when you upgraded your phone a while ago. It’s a customizable persona of yourself where you can edit it to look like how you want to be perceived online. It can look like you, or you can make it look like the you you’ve always wanted to look like!

With the Instagram Avatar, you can customize almost everything about the avatar—from outfits to hairstyles, to expressions. The sky is the limit.

At the moment, Instagram Avatars can only be used on stories and in DMs, but from the way Meta and Instagram are talking … it looks like these Avatars will be something used a lot more in the future. Like being the identity that you show in the world of the Metaverse.

How to Create an Instagram Avatar

Instagram Avatars are currently available in the US, Canada, and Mexico with more countries getting the feature in the next few months. Here’s how to create one for yourself:

1. Head to your profile page and click the menu icon at the top-right corner.

2. Open “settings”

3. Select “account”

4. Select “Avatars”

You can also find them in your Instagram Stories when you click the sticker tray and select the “Avatar” sticker.
