Twitter is officially dead ❌

If you were anywhere on the internet this past week, you'll know the biggest piece of news—Elon Musk is now officially in his "Blaze Your Glory" era and Twitter is officially gone.

RIP to the blue bird. 

But, there's a lot more to it than just that this week. From new updates to Threads (uh oh, Elon!) to TikTok getting into some sticky territory, social media news is a packed one this week.

Here we go! X has officially landed and everything that was once the bird app is now dead.

As of yesterday, the blue bird app turned black and what once were “tweets” have officially become “posts.”

Even the brand’s motto has changed to “Blaze your glory.” I really can’t say what it means but it obviously means something about the future of X.

If you thought you could keep your Twitter icon on your website, now is the time to update your icons with the new X logo because it seems like it is here to stay (well, Musk might decide to update the logo soon, but we shall see).

With only a week into the new brand, it’s an interesting time for other apps similar to X to pop up and try to take over. *Cough* Threads and Bluesky *Cough* Will they defeat the brand or will X continue to win out in the end?

• Instagram is now labeling content that has been generated by AI.

• LinkedIn is wanting to help you find a job and now has a new AI tool to help do just that.
  
  

• The “Following” feed is finally here on Threads!
  
  

• Does chronological feed help polarization on social media apps? Meta says nope.
  
  

• Snapchat is still going strong? Yes, the ghost app now has 397 million users.
  
  

• You get a subscription! And you! And you! Instagram is expanding its creator subscription to more countries.
  
  

• Something no one asked for—you can now share text-based posts on TikTok.

While Instagram has been hard at work with making Threads the most downloaded app on the planet, it still is continuing its work on generative AI inside the app.

The first roll out of this was a few months ago with its AI tools for creating ads, but now Instagram looks to be rolling out even more AI features to make content creation, engagement, and more even easier on the app.

You can now get access to:

⭐️ AI Stickers: Create your own custom graphics based solely on text prompts that you provide.

⭐️ Visual editing tools: You can now use AI tools to remove or replace different parts of your video or image. Use the AI brush to replace parts of your image. Or “Restyle,” which recreates different parts of the image by using text prompts.

⭐️ AI chatbox: Instagram is experimenting with a chatbot that is built inside your DMs. You’ll be able to summon the chat by typing “@ai” into the chat field and asking it any and all questions.

⭐️ Message summary: Don’t want to read all of your messages? No worries. This new tool will summarize all of your messages for you in one go.

⭐️ Labels on AI content: Because, obviously, things are being overrun by AI at the moment, Instagram will be adding labels to things that were created by AI to be more transparent.

While these are definitely not all the tools coming out for Instagram (and not all of these tools are available for everyone currently!), it will definitely be interesting to see what else Instagram comes up with to make its app that much easier to use.

Now that is a dramatic title, if I do say so myself. But things are majorly going to change when it comes to sounds on TikTok and that’s all thanks to a brand called Activision suing TikTok star Anthony Fantano.

What the what?

Let me break it down for you:

Fantano asked Activision to pay him $100,000 for using a viral sound that he made on TikTok for one of its ads on the app. Because the ad is using Fantano’s voice, he feels like he should be able to get paid. Fair enough.

However … Activision used the sound as it was available in the sound library for businesses. So, it really didn’t do anything wrong and there was nothing illegal in the brand using the sound. Because Fantano uploaded the sound to TikTok, he waived away his rights over his voice being used in marketing.

Yikes.

While it seems like a straight-forward case, whatever the results are could seriously change the game of social media and sound usage on the apps.

If Activision wins, it could mean that more and more brands will feel comfortable using viral sounds to promote their products, and creators could stop making their clips into sounds.

If Activision loses, it means that brands could feel too nervous about using any sounds at all in fear of getting slapped with a major lawsuit. 😬
