Instagram launches paid subscriptions 😳

Happy Halloween! Is there anything more scary than all the updates, algorithm changes, and general anxiety that comes with working in social media?! 

Nah, I can't say there is. 

Speaking of updates, there have been updates aplenty this week across all social media platforms. Buckle up, kids. It's time to set your away message and dive into this week's social media news.

Well, it seems like Instagram is dropping new features left, right, and center. From updating Notes to creating new icons in Stories, here’s all the features Instagram has released … that absolutely no one asked for:

Nearby Feed: Stories is getting an update with a new “Nearby” Story, which highlights content from users that are close to you. Sounds a bit like Snapchat and TikTok, if you ask us.

Video Notes: Notes have become a huuuuuge hit with younger users and IG is focusing hard on them. You can now add a selfie video to your Notes to increase engagement.

Polls In Comments: You can officially add polls to your comment section on your feed and Reels posts.

Sticker Creation: Cut, copy, paste! You can now create stickers from your very own photos with IG’s new Story option.

Notes Reactions: Show off your love (or dislike—we’re not here to judge!) of your friend’s latest Notes.

While none of the features are life altering, it is fascinating to see how much effort IG is putting behind Notes (a feature that my friends, nor I, ever use … but I could also just be too much of a millennial for this). Let us know over on IG what feature you’re most excited to about.

After owning X (FKA Twitter) for a full year, Elon Musk is working hard on trying to get more people to subscribe to the platform. In the past week, X has launched two new plans in an effort to get more revenue coming in.

The first plan introduced was Premium+, where for $16/month you’ll not only get the perks that come with being a subscriber (editing tweets, blue checkmarks encrypted, and more), but also no ads, full access to creator tools, and a massive boost for your replies.

The second plan introduced is the cheapest plan at $3/month called the “Basic” plan. With the plan you’ll get a small boost to your replies, but nothing … else. So why you would pay that each month is … unclear at the moment.

Subscriber numbers are still low on the platform but after making users in New Zealand pay $1/year to access X, it seems like Musk is doing everything possible to get some cash.

Threads is still holding on strong and getting more downloads each day, according to Zuckerberg. Last week, the Zuck said Threads is “just under 100 million monthly actives at this point, and (Meta is) now getting to the point where (they’re) going to be focusing on growing the community further.”

With X slowly declining, it seems like Threads could be the way of the future. And to get people excited about using the app, Threads is getting new features each week to generate more interest.

Last week, Threads added polls and gifs to the platform to increase engagement. Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, has also announced Threads is working on creating an API, but is hesitant “that it’ll mean a lot more publisher content and not much more creator content.”

Letting third-party apps have access to the API of the platform could be just the thing Threads needs to get more users through the door … but we will have to wait and see. 👀

Meta is officially launching its paid subscription (here’s looking at you, X!) in the EU.

For as “little” as €9.99/month, users can scroll through Facebook and Instagram completely ad-free.

Meta announced that it does believe in an “ad-supported internet” and claims the subscription is only there to work in the guidelines of new EU laws. However, if enough people are willing to cough up the cash each month, could this be a feature that Meta rolls out worldwide?

Time (and money) will tell.
