Ad-free social media is here 🤯

It's been a rollercoaster of a week on social media and, honestly, where do we even begin? 

From Zuckerberg making a quite interesting claim about the Metaverse and "bringing back the dead" (Halloween is right around the corner...) and Elon Musk causing absolute chaos for social media managers everywhere on X this past week, it's been quite interesting to work in social this week. 

Grab your coffee. Take a breath. Relax your shoulders (perhaps book a massage?). It's time for your weekly roundup of social media news!

It’s an interesting move for sure. And one Elon Musk believes to be “more aesthetically pleasing.” X has officially removed headlines from all of the URLs that are shared on the platform.

Now, when you scroll, you’ll see the main image of the article with a small domain link to indicate it’s an article … but nothing else.

And of course once this was announced and implemented, chaos ensued on the platform with people making up their own headlines to articles. Because … why not?

Not only that, but for those who use screen readers and VoiceOver on the platform, it limits the accessibility for them which isn’t a good look for X.

While casually scrolling X the past week, it’s been hard to distinguish which is an article and which is just a photo (IMHO!). Will this change make people want to post more often like Musk hopes, or will it annoy people more and cause them to leave the platform for good? 🤔

• No more likes or reposts? That’s soon going to be a thing on X soon.
  
  

• Facebook’s new AI stickers are leaving people confused and a bit weirded out.
  
  

• You get a story! And you get a story! Share your IG stories with multiple groups at once. Why? No one really knows.
  
  

• Social media managers, rejoice! Instagram insights are officially available on desktop (but they’ve always been available on Flick 😏).
  
  

• TikTok Shop is not doing so hot in the US.
  
  

• New tiered subscriptions are coming to X. Yes, more.
  
  

• Facebook gave access to its Facebook page to an unknown user by accident. Whoops-a-daisy.
  
  

• YouTube says it’s time to breakup with your ad blocker.

Instagram is trying really, really (really) hard to be cool again — especially to Gen Z.

The app has officially launched four new features that are aimed specifically at the younger demographic on the app who seem to be spending less and less time on IG and more and more time on TikTok.

After getting various feedback from users, Instagram has released these cool, funky, happenin’ features on the app:

👉 Multiple close-friend groups: You can now create multiple different groups of friends to share stories to. And if you’re Kim Kardashian, you could probably name one of the groups “NOT KOURTNEY.”

👉 Birthday shout-outs: According to IG, Gen Z loves to shout and hype each other. You can now shout out your friend’s birthday more easily and be reminded of their birthday all within the app.

👉 Audio snippets on Notes: Voice notes will soon be a thing on Instagram Notes. As the music feature was so much a hit, IG believes voice notes will be the next big thing.

👉 Selfie videos on Notes: Don’t want to share an update in Stories? You can now add a video inside Notes. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.

While I’m excited about multiple close-friend groups, I can’t personally see myself using the other options. Let us know over on Instagram what you think!

It seems like every social media platform is working on an ad-free option, but you’re going to have to pay.

Both TikTok and Meta have announced that they are working on options to view the platforms completely free of advertising.

Yes, no more ads on social media.

It seems that the EU is putting a lot of pressure on the social media giants to offer an option for users to opt-out from targeted ads, and the best way to do that and make money?

By offering an ad-free option that you have to pay for.

Both Meta and TikTok are hoping this will smooth things over with the EU, and if it does, it will be interesting to see how many people are willing to fork out $14/month to not see any ads on their feeds.

Me? I’ll be sticking with the ads for a while, but it would be nice to scroll and not see the same ad over and over and over again…
