And no, we’re not just talking about adding music to your Instagram Reels. You already do that anyway! In today’s post, we’re teaching you all about adding music to your Instagram Posts and Stories and why you should start adding music to yours today.

Why add music to your Instagram Posts and Stories?
Adding music to your Instagram Posts and Stories is a great way to get people to engage with your content more. Trust us, the number of people who have put a fire emoji over a song we’ve posted online is evidence of how much more likely people are to engage with music!
When you add music, it tends to elevate your content and take it to the next level. By adding music to your Posts and Stories, it can create more humor on a meme or funny video you share; inject some spiciness to a photo; or bring back summer memories to a carousel post.
How to add music to an Instagram post
Yes, you can now add music to your Instagram posts. The song title will appear above the post while the song plays in the background as people scroll.
Here’s how to add music to any of your Instagram posts:
- Click the “+” at the bottom of the screen to create a new post
- Select the photo(s) you would like to post.
- Edit your image, add your gorgeous caption, tag people, add hashtags, and do all the things that you would typically do when posting.
- On the edit page, you will see an option called “Add music”
- Click this option to be directed to the music page.
- Select a song from the For You page and/or search for a song inside the app.
- Once you have found the song you like, adjust the clip to the section of the song you’d like.
- When you’re happy with the snippet, click “done” and post!
💡 Flick’s tip: While you can’t schedule a song inside a third-party scheduling tool just yet, you can stay on top of your social. Start scheduling out all of your Instagram content and get a notification when it’s time to post. Once you get the notification, you can add your song to your content and post.

How to add music to Instagram Stories
So now that we know the why, let’s talk about the how! Here’s how to add music to your Instagram Stories:
- Open your Instagram app
- Once open, click on your Instagram Story, so you can start creating content.
- Create a video or take a photo. If you already have content you want to add to your story on your phone, swipe up to upload the content from your camera roll.
- Once your content is put together, click the sticker icon at the top of the screen.
- Select the “music” sticker.
- From here, scroll through your “For You” page full of suggested songs. Don’t see a song you want? You can search for a song you’d like to add in the search bar.
- Once you find a song, add it to your Story.
- Select which part of the song you want to play in the background.
- Choose how you would like the song to display on your story (you can have lyrics, the album cover, or just the music itself.
- Share your story!
Instagram has a large number of songs that you can choose from. However, if you have a business account, you won’t have access to all the songs on the platform.
Because of Instagram’s licensing agreements, business accounts can only use royalty-free music. There are tricks to get around that (which you can find out here), but we don’t recommend using them as you can get in trouble!

How to add music to Instagram Story without a sticker
There are a few ways you can add music to your Story without clicking the “music” sticker. If you use a music app, you can share music directly to the Instagram Story from the app. Here is how to do just that!
How to add music to Instagram Story from Apple Music
- Go to the song you want to share and click the three dots.
- From there, click “share”
- An application menu will appear, select “Instagram”
- Instagram will open and automatically add the song to your Instagram Story draft
- You’re ready to post!
How to add music to Instagram Story from Spotify
- Open Spotify and find the song you want to share
- Tap the share icon at the bottom of the screen
- Click “Stories” once the options appear
- Instagram will open up automatically and add the song to your Instagram Story draft.
- You’re ready to post!
Can I add my own music to Instagram?
Yes! You can easily add your music to Instagram Stories and Posts for those budding musicians.
If your music is on a music streaming platform already, you can follow the steps from above and share immediately with your Story.
However, if you want the song to be used on Instagram and have others use it as well, you can add your songs to Instagram’s music library.
To add music to its library, you need to use a third-party music distribution.
