RIP X (FKA Twitter) 🪦

Well, let's just say that this week definitely took a turn for the worse for good ol' Elon Musk and X (scroll down to see what I am talking about!). How X will recover is anyone's guess at the moment. 

But X isn't the only one having a week. Meta is experimenting with a lot of new features, TikTok is trying to take on another type of app, and Clubhouse ... is returning? 

Yeah, it's an interesting week so grab your drink and let's get into it.

Well, only if you decide to pay for it. It seems like Meta might be testing a new feature in the EU where you can pay for a monthly subscription to Meta that is completely free of ads.

Yes, free.

Let’s all take a moment to reflect on the old days in 2006 as we scrolled Facebook and there was no ads. That could be our new future once more. Or, at least the test is going to experiment to see how many people:

1️⃣ Want to pay for an ad-free experience

2️⃣ Actually care about seeing ads and want to avoid being tracked online

While it’s going to be awhile to see if the test is effective (and/or if it’ll even happen at all!), it is a nice thought that we might be able to soon casually scroll and not see a single company trying to sell us anything we don’t really, really need (except those Chelsea boots that I keep getting targeted — I do really need those).

Something that I didn’t have on my bingo board in 2023 — Clubhouse trying to make another comeback.

Yes, that app that you downloaded back in lockdown in 2020 and then immediately forgot about is slowly trying to make itself relevant again.

In a new blog post from the company, it is now going to be “more like a messaging app” with voice-only group chats.

Think the Marco Polo app. Think voice notes on iMessage and WhatsApp. Think of any messaging platform that utilizes voices. And that’s the new vision for Clubhouse.

While I don’t see this being the thing that will make Clubhouse survive, it’s nice to see the app trying to figure out new ways to get people interested once more.

It very well could be if the download count is anything to go by. X has hit the lowest amount of downloads in over a decade — plus the amount of active users has massively declined in the past year.

That doesn’t bode well at all for the company.

Since the rebrand from Twitter to X, downloads have taken a nose dive. X (FKA Twitter) used to get 15-30 millions users a month for the past 12 years and now it’s only gained 10 million for the month of August.

Eeek.

Earlier this year, Elon Musk claimed that he will get X to 1 billion users a month by 2024 and with the lack of new downloads coming in, he has a long way to go for that to happen.

It’s official: Meta said last week that it will be removing Facebook News from its app in the UK, France, and Germany later on this year.

While users will still be able to access news articles on the platform (unlike Canada!), the dedicated tab will be removed as, according to Meta, “less than 3% of what people around the world see in their Facebook feed” is news.

I’ve never personally scrolled the News feed on Facebook so maybe I am missing out, but for those of you who do, how are you feeling about this leaving the app?
