What the Zuck is happening at Meta?

It's a new week! Which means: social media news is going off. Like always. Will this ever change? 

I sure hope not or I'd be out of a job!

This week, TikTok is taking on new competitors, Kanye is doing ... something, and Zuckerberg is still trying to make the Metaverse happen.

Grab your drink of choice (and please don't say Negroni Sbagliato with Prosecco), and let's dive in.

That's how the song goes, right?

Well, it soon will be if TikTok has its say. With TikTok basically making every app and even Google shake in its boots, TikTok is taking on a new challenge. 

Last week, it was reported that TikTok could be building its own shopping fulfillment centers in the US.

Say wut. 

There have been a string of job listings seen over on LinkedIn that listed global fulfillment center positions in Seattle and LA. And after TikTok has been testing e-commerce on its platform through allowing people to link their Shopify stores and testing live shopping, it looks like it’s taking that e-commerce to the next level. 

While it’s still unclear how it will fully work, TikTok did tell Axios that it intends to provide “a selection of merchants which offer a range of product options as well as delivery options” in areas where it has e-commerce programs. 

Could this be the thing that takes on Amazon … the biggest e-commerce platform in the world? Because we all know the things that go viral on TikTok end up sold out immediately, and having a fulfillment center that can help those products sell, sell, sell could be just the thing that competes with Bezos. 👀

• TikTok is updating its live features with age restrictions and adult-only streams.

After restricting Kanye’s Twitter account this past week and Elon officially taking over as Head Guy in Charge, Twitter seems to be taking another look at its permanent banning policy.

WTF does that mean? 

Well, it appears the company is rethinking its approach of permanently banning people for lesser offences (like sharing misleading information—whoops) and trying to figure out if there are other moderation tools that could replace its harsh punishment of taking someone’s account away from them. 😬

At the moment, Twitter bans accounts that have violated its rules “in a particularly egregious way” or have “repeatedly violated them even after receiving notifications from us.” It also doesn’t allow users to share violent threats, harassment and hate speech, or terrorism. This also includes a 5-strikes and you’re out policy to spreading misinformation. 

While the relaxation on rules policy isn’t enforced just yet, it is a look inside to seeing how Twitter (and the rest of social media accounts that will soon follow) will look under Elon Musk.

YouTube is now entering the 2022 social media space and finally adding the ability to add handles for channels.

Rejoice! Like Lizzo said, “It’s about damn time.” 👏

This is such a great move for the platform as it’ll make it SO much easier to drive people to your profile and promote your channel on the app.

Before this, unique channel URLs were only available for people who had 100 subscribers but now it’s available to ALL users (much like most social media apps). 

While part of this is to help promote channels and make it easier to mention accounts in comments, community posts, and video descriptions, it’s also to help stop copycat channels. Being able to have a unique handle will make it harder for people to replicate certain handles to trick users with scams. 

If you don’t have your handle yet, you’ll want to hurry up and grab it soon before you’re too late!
