Does anyone have their popcorn ready? Because I have been LIVING for the FTC trial against Meta this past week … and ALL of the gossip coming out of it. Mark Zuckerberg appears to be getting a little sweaty under the collar, and it’s easy to see why.
It’s a pretty packed week with news bits, random features being tested, new launches across all platforms, and so much more.
Your ready? Because I sure as heck am! |

OpenAI is creating a social media app 🙃 |
Cool! Another app! How many social media apps do we need? Apparently, the limit does not exist!
OpenAI is looking at creating a ChatGPT-powered social media feed. Details about the feed are still hush-hush, but the possibility of it spinning off into its own app is on the table.
While no information has truly been released just yet, it does look like Sam Altman, founder of OpenAI, is gathering data and intel to create an app that rivals Meta and X.
It seems we will just have to wait and see… |

Time to blend with friends 👯♀️ |
I know I’m not Head of Naming Things at Instagram, but couldn’t we have gotten a better name for this?
Anyway, Blends is officially out of Beta testing and launched across Instagram!
To help keep people on the app longer and more engaged, Instagram has created a new feature where you can create an invite-only Reels feed for you and a group of your friends from your DMs.
From here, you can scroll through Reels Instagram thinks you and your friends will collectively enjoy. When one of you reacts to a Reel, you can chat about the Reel inside your DM.
It seems like quite a bit of work for a feature that most people already sort of do? I don’t really understand how this is any different from sending Reels to your friends and talking about it inside DMs, but maybe I’m missing something?
To create a Blend, here’s what you need to do: - Open a DM
- Tap the Blend button
- Click “Invite” to your friends
-
The Blend will be created as soon as one person accepts the Blend
And scene!
(How many times can I say “blend”?)
Will you be using this new feature or sharing Reels the old-fashioned way? |

Meta’s FTC trial raised some serious revelations 👀 |
Oh boy! The Zuck has been on trial as the FTC’s antitrust case against Meta began last week, and there have been some fun insights into the company.
While the trial is to determine if Meta is running a monopoly, here are some key details we’ve learned so far from last week: - Instagram was a mega threat to Facebook. I mean, obvs. That’s why they bought it. Apparently Zuckerberg was super worried about falling behind Instagram, so he bought it for a cool billion.
-
Facebook was considering creating its own photo-sharing app before acquiring Instagram, but the Facebook Camera app wasn’t very good.
- They also considered buying Instagram only to quickly kill it. Big yikes!
- Facebook offered $6 billion for Snapchat after originally offering $3 billion.
-
Meta views TikTok and LinkedIn (and even the Nextdoor app) as big competition. Zuck said that when TikTok was banned (for one day), Instagram and Facebook traffic surged by 20%.
- Facebook wanted to reset everyone’s Facebook accounts and create an ad-only platform. Weird.
The trial is still ongoing, and I will definitely be keeping you updated on all the weird and fun revelations along the way! |
