• Will a new social media app launch this year that will take the place of TikTok?
• Will people actually slowly take a step back from social media like their 2024 “ins” list say?

Only time will tell! And until all those things are revealed, it’s time to see everything we missed over the past two weeks when it’s come to social media news.

Today’s newsletter might look slightly different as things have been a bit … quiet. But let’s jump right on in.

Yes, it seems like 2024 is the year of the Notes—well, Instagram sure wants it to be.

In the past two weeks, IG has released and tested even more ways for users to use Notes inside the app. Why is this such a big push? Because younger users are enjoying the feature and apparently IG needs to add it in anywhere they can.

It seriously has no chill.

With Notes, you can now:

Add Notes to your profile which will last for 3-days a time. Which, if you ask me, defeats the purpose of Notes but maybe that’s just me?

The profile Note will be added as a new tab on your profile and will work similarly to inbox Notes where you can comment and engage with the Note on anyone’s profile.

Other places Notes are being added? Oh, just on feed posts. And on Reels. And in your DMs. And on your profile.

You know … everywhere.

Maybe I am wrong and this will be the thing that really boosts younger users engagement on the app, but I feel like there can be way too much of a “good” thing.

• Don’t want a stranger knowing you liked someone’s post? You can now choose who can see your likes.
  
  

• IG is pushing hard on wanting people to use Notes.
  
  

• Threads coming to third-party apps? It seems like Meta is working on an API and we’re SO excited.
  
  

• YouTube is releasing its Premium subscriptions to more and more countries.
  
  

• X is worth less than 29% of what Elon Musk actually paid. Whoops.
  
  

• Looks like Meta is really trying hard to get people to join its virtual world—its made its Quest Headset even cheaper.
  
  

• Not sure if this is needed but LinkedIn is testing its own short-form video feature.
  
  

• You’ll soon be able to use Messenger on third-party apps. Why? Well, because Meta wants to take over the world.
  
  

• Instagram is working on the ability to share your live location with friends through DMs. Is this a thing that's needed?
  
  

• Pay to … view? Paywall content is officially on X.

It might have taken almost 7 years, but Meta’s Messenger has officially launched end-to-end encryption by default.

According to Meta, when the encryption is on, only you and the other person can see the messages you’re sending. At the moment, the default feature is only available for calls and one-on-one chats. If you’re in a group chat, you can opt-in to the feature but it’s not automatic.

And if you’re wondering when your Instagram DMs will follow suit, it looks like Meta is looking to launch encryption for DMs this summer.
