Meta banned in the UK? 😳

I tried. I really tried. I tried finding more than just Twitter news this week (and I succeeded ... in some ways), but the people want what the people want. And that want is all things Twitter. 

So read it and weep ... and also scroll because there is more news outside of Twitter. I promise! I did it!

Yes, we’re talking all things Twitter again. If you’re not interested, might I suggest a light scroll to the next topic because I promise to be Easy, Breezy, Cover Girl over here.

After firing over half of his staff, Musk is looking to hire more people on to get his grand plan of the ol’ bird app off the ground. What exactly are those grand plans? Well, lucky for all of us, he released a pitch deck for the future of Twitter!

• Advertising as Entertainment: With ad spend down, this could be a cool partnership with Twitter to get more ad dollars through the door. What’s the idea behind it? Well, no one really knows but just know, it could be cool.
  
  
• Video: In the pitch deck, all it says is video. However, we know Musk is all about getting longer-form video content on the platform so let’s go with that.
  
  
• Encrypted DMs: With encryption being the standard for most social media apps, Twitter is now moving to make your DMs safe and encrypted too.
  
  
• Longform Tweets: Because no one wants a Notes app screenshot apology posted to Twitter anymore.
  
  
• Twitter Blue Verification: After the back and forth of Blue Verified, it’s officially ready to be re-launched once more with more rules in place.
  
  
• Payments: Again, there are no actual examples in the pitch deck, but from previous statements by Musk, payments will be ways for you to make payments (duh!) to other accounts, and in the future to make in-app purchases, banking, etc.

Are these changes enough to bring some revenue back into Twitter? Where do you see the future of Twitter going—will it eventually become the Everything App that Musk has always wanted? Only time and tweets will tell.

According to a new UK bill, Meta could stop operating in the UK.

In a statement from Meta, it is looking to be protected by the government so they can continue to stay open and operate in the country. The new bill is looking to sunset quite a bit of laws from the EU and one of those laws that protects social media companies could just be one of the ones that go bye-bye.

Eeeeek.

And with Meta recently getting fined €265 million by Irish watchdog over violating people’s privacy and having its biggest layoffs ever, 2022 hasn’t been too kind to the social media company…

First came America, and now comes the EU. According to the president of the European Commission, there are multiple ongoing investigations into the clock app.

And the EU’s concerns? Data, of course. Particularly how China and targeted ads are aimed at minors (hello, it’s exactly what Meta just got fined for in Ireland!).

While earlier this year, TikTok enforced new policies around ads and branded content to align itself to EU rules, there are definite concerns being raised about data collection of European citizens who use the app.

Will the EU go as far as America to talk about banning the app? We will see, but it looks like TikTok will have to jump through more hoops to remain alive and kicking through the New Year.

After the flood of fake accounts and impersonations happened nonstop after Twitter let anyone buy their way to a blue checkmark and Twitter said “Ope! We can’t have nice things!,” Twitter is now relaunching its verification program.

The blue check will look a bit different though … by not actually being blue for everyone.

According to Musk, corporate and government accounts will get different colored checkmarks which will make sure people can’t willy-nilly buy a checkmark claiming they are a company or organization.

“Gold check for companies, grey check for government, blue for individuals (celebrity or not) and all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before check activates." 

It will also now manually check all verifications to make sure that no pesky imposters slip through the cracks.

As Musk said, “Painful, but necessary.”
