How to REEL-y hook your audience 🪝

Before we deep dive into this week in social, let's take a deep breath. Let's check in. How are we all doing? Have you taken a step away from your laptop or phone today? Did you have some water? Good. Because you're going to need it. 

It's been a WEEK of announcements at various conferences — from Mark Zuckerberg finally announcing all the AI Meta has been working hard on to X ... announcing other things. 

Grab your coffee. Take a deep breath. And let's get into it. 

It’s finally happening! The Zuck announced last week at Meta Connect 2023 that AI is going to touch every area of Meta in a big, big way.

While other platforms are working on releasing different versions of AI chatbots, Meta has quietly been plotting away at its own AI programs and, boy oh boy, it is A LOT. Let’s get into them:

🤖 Meta AI: Meta AI is similar to other chatbots that are on the market currently, where you can ask it questions and use it for recommendations, information on things nearby, and, honestly, whatever questions that might pop into your head.

🤖 Celebrity AI characters: If you want your AI chatbot to look like a celebrity, you can.

🤖 AI image editing: You’ll soon be able to edit your images inside Instagram with a new AI tool. You’ll be able to change the style of your photos, change the background and more. And Meta said all AI images will have a label to indicate that its AI.

🤖 AI stickers: We’ve already been seeing a version of this being tested on Instagram recently and it seems like it’s finally almost here: AI stickers. Now, you can make your own stickers by describing what you want, and Instagram’s AI will create it for you.

🤖 AI studio: The studio will be a way for people to train AI models on their businesses for customer service and communication. Or, for creators to build their own AI persona to help build up their brand and online presence.

And it sounds like this is only just the beginning. With Meta working on a redesign for WhatsApp and the Metaverse getting further and further into being … somewhat cool (?), it seems like Zuckerberg is really flipping the script on Meta being relevant again.

• X is now warning users if they’re on the verge of a shadowban.
  
  

• Snapchat is looking to be more like TikTok (who isn’t these days?) by adding its own FYP.
  
  

• Reddit is going to be paying creators? Yeah, that seems to be the new plan.
  
  

• Google podcasts are saying “bye-bye” next year.
  
  

• This could be interesting for couples … Instagram has a new feature that allows you to control who can see likes you’ve made.
  
  

• Hashtags are still relevant (!!) and Instagram has proven our point.
  
  

• Artifact (yeah, remember that app?) is adding the ability to post in-app … and it’s pretty similar to X.
  
  

• BeReal says it’s still relevant with 35M daily users.
  
  

• X is testing an ad-free monthly plan.

Last week, CEO of X, Linda Yaccarino spoke at the Code Conference and it left a fair share of people scratching their heads and wondering what in the heck is going on at X.

Throughout the panel interview, Yaccarino appears … quite defensive. She explained that advertisers were coming back after fleeing months earlier, X is a platform for “free expression and freedom of speech,” and even claimed that X will be profitable by early next year.

But the more people questioned her on new features and Elon Musk’s comments about making X a paid-only app, Yaccarino appeared to get flustered and didn’t give a clear answer.

It seems that X is still trying to find its feet under the new leadership, and maybe one day it will be clear to everyone. Including its CEO.

As I was doing my usual scroll through X this past weekend, I stumbled upon Lex Fridman’s newest podcast with Mark Zuckerberg … where they spoke inside the Metaverse.

And like everyone else in the comment section, I was shocked to see how good the avatars looked after months (and years) of mocking what the Metaverse looked like.

While both men describe being in the Metaverse for the first few minutes of the podcast, you quickly forget that they are actually hundreds of miles away from each other … and you’re watching two avatars speak in virtual reality.

Let’s just say … the Metaverse is real. It’s here. And the future is looking like virtual reality.
